A Working Birkenhead
Over the last few years, our area has seen decent jobs under threat, with poor wages and zero-hours contracts becoming rife. I will fight to ensure Birkenhead workers get a better deal, and that jobs at workplaces such as Cammell Lairds, Vauxhall’s and Unilever will continue to be well-paid and unionised jobs. I would also seek to establish a new forum for identifying the skill requirements of local businesses for future workers – particularly our young, who need a helping hand up the jobs ladder. I would also fight for a £10 living wage and to get rid of zero-hour contracts.
For a Real Labour Government
There are some serious battles to be fought if we are to get a Labour government ready to implement a socialist programme. All my life I have fought for the improvement of conditions for our class, and I relish the opportunity to challenge the vested interests that lie at the heart of this rotten government. I am committed to fighting for a socialist Britain led by Jeremy Corbyn, and I don’t shirk from that.
Defending our Green Spaces
I will fight to protect our green spaces across the Wirral and ensure that our community’s access to fresh air and pleasant surroundings comes before the whims of the super-rich and property developers. Plenty of us feel that new luxury developments are unwanted and a threat to our quality of life. Our communities need a real say over their own destiny with proper devolution under a Labour government.
Dignity for the Elderly
Our elders in the community are suffering from record levels of homelessness. I wish to protect vital social spaces and communal areas for the elderly to ensure that those who fought so hard for our generation are given the dignity and human contact they deserve in later life. Local Government should be given the resources to take care services and care homes back in-house. Furthermore, I pledge to stand up for the rights of WASPI women, as well as fighting for over-75's to keep their free TV licences.
First and foremost I will be a campaigning MP, fighting against the closure of any of our medical walk-in centres on the Wirral. Most importantly, I pledge to fight & defend our entire NHS, and I’d campaign in any Parliament for its full renationalisation. Why is it that many people in Birkenhead have to suffer from mental health problems? As someone whose family has been affected by this issue, I will be a passionate advocate for properly funded & widely accessible mental health provision.
A Caring State
People feel intimidated by the chaos that is Universal Credit. If I am elected, I will fight to stop and scrap Universal Credit altogether and will campaign for a welfare state that puts the well-being of ordinary people before cost-cutting considerations. I will ensure that a future Labour government scraps the bedroom tax and fully reverses the cuts to the ESA that are impacting so cruelly on the lives of our disabled brothers and sisters.
A Future for Young People
Early years and school funding has been slashed in Birkenhead and it doesn’t feel like those in power in Westminster have any interest in the improvement of our children’s lives. I would work with parents and teachers to highlight the destruction of comprehensive education at the hands of the Tories. I will also support all legislation aimed at creating universal childcare, reversing the academisation of our schools and reintroducing EMA and free education.
Decent Housing for All
Here as it is anywhere, Birkenhead is suffering from an acute housing crisis, with the average rent far too high. I will campaign, not for so-called “social housing”, but for thousands of new council houses to be built across our community. I also support Jeremy’s plans to introduce legislation to ensure proper regulation of the private rented sector, including rent controls.
Rebuilding our Community
Cuts to police and fire services have decimated our emergency services. I will fight to protect and rebuild our emergency services and support FBU campaigns to save Merseyside’s fire stations. In other areas, I will make sure that local government get a greater say over how to plan our town’s future, and over how the police should best tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
Bring Back Public Transport
Our transport system is failing us dramatically in the north, and in Birkenhead we are often overlooked when it comes to proper investment. I will push for better bus and train services for Birkenhead and will investigate how to develop further integrated services. I will also continue to support keeping the guard on the Merseyrail trains, and believe that the railway should be nationalised – for the benefit of the travelling public, not the private shareholders. I will also campaign for the re-regulation and nationalisation of bus services, which are vital for local people.
Unshackle the Unions
Tory attacks on working people have left a legacy of an embattled trade union movement shackled by authoritarian anti-worker legislation. I intend to campaign for a true Labour government which will free up trade unions to fight for their members. Not only will this push up wages for people in Birkenhead, but workers will be able to defend local industry from asset-stripping and deliberate industrial decline.
